The Fisherman and the Salmon - A Gaspesian Fable
This is a fable about a forbidden love that takes place on the Grand Cascapedia River, a well-known salmon river on the Gaspe Coast.
It is a timely tale about a young salmon and what happens to her when a fisherman throws his lure across the waters in the hopes of catching her. You will feel the passion that love brings into her life as she innocently allows herself to be captured, despite the warnings of her elders who oversee the river's habitat.
Excerpt from the book...
In this watery place, thousands of fish swam within the boundaries of the riverbank. Like humans, their lives were based on nature’s struggle for survival with the strong dominating the weak. Over the years the fisherman had observed the comings and goings of many fish, watching in fascination as they swam. He grew accustomed to the seasonal changes in their life cycle and every morning he returned to the river full of hope and anticipation that this would be the day to catch the imaginary salmon that filled his dreams.
The years passed and he patiently continued to throw his line across the glistening waters of this beautiful river. One evening when daylight was finding its way toward a magnificent sunset, he noticed a fish in one of the shallow pools. He watched as her silver-speckled body swam gracefully in front of him. He had just tied a feathered fly hook called the Maiden’s Run onto his fishing line when he first observed Maya.
She seemed to be a beauty as she swam through the waters. But she did not go seem interested in his lure. Instead, the bewitching creature remained nearby and seemed to be watching him. He was mesmerized by her perfection, and he knew that she was the one that he had spent his life hoping to catch.
