Mary Ann Perreault was born in Saint-Majorique, a village near Gaspe on July 29, 1878.
As a young woman, she left the Gaspe Coast to go to Montreal and find work. She found a job working as a maid for the General Manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway.
When the Titanic, the largest ship in the world left Southampton, England on April 10th for its maiden voyage to Canada, Mary Anne was on it. She was one of the lucky ones as she had been put on a lifeboat along with other women and children after the mighty ship hit an iceberg.
In later years, she left testimony about when she remembered about that fatal night when she watched what was supposed to be an unsinkable ship disappear beneath the frigid waters of the North Atlantic.
